Every Saturday at 9am, clusters of runners gather at Munich’s green lungs, from serene Westpark to the tree-lined shores of Riemer Park, ready for a timed 5-kilometre dash that costs nothing and asks only for your enthusiasm. Parkrun, the global community event, has taken root in Munich, giving fitness newcomers and seasoned runners regular opportunities to stride out together in stunning surroundings.
Parks are more than just pretty corners in Munich—they're vital spaces for daily wellness, especially as the city contends with increasingly hot summers and a shifting climate. Staying active outdoors is no longer just a hobby: it’s one of the city’s strongest defences against rising stress levels and sedentary office routines. As the mercury creeps higher in July, parkrun’s routes through shaded groves and alongside cool lakes offer a double benefit: accessible exercise and some relief from the heat.
Westpark, situated right off Heimeranplatz in Sendling-Westpark, leads the pack in both turnout and atmosphere. Its official parkrun event, the Westpark parkrun, attracts around 120 participants each week. Volunteers, often hailing from local running clubs like LG Stadtwerke München, manage the timing, cheering, and post-run coffee meetups at Café Gans am Wasser. The course winds twice through flower gardens, shady beech stands, and over the iconic Japanese Garden footbridge. Public transit is straightforward: U6 to Partnachplatz or Bus 54 to Westpark (Ost).
For those in the east, Riemer Parkrun is Munich’s other established event, hosted on the gently rolling paths of Riemer Park in Trudering-Riem. The site was built for the 2005 Federal Garden Show and now serves as a community hub for outdoor fitness. The parkrun starts near the Riemer lake promenade and circles the flat dirt trails, offering panoramic views and a splash in the cool water afterwards. Parking is available at Willy-Brandt-Allee, and the park is a short walk from S-Bahn Riem.
Munich’s two main parkrun locations regularly draw a combined 200-250 participants on a typical summer weekend. Westpark parkrun recently celebrated its 100th event, while Riemer Parkrun has doubled its weekly average since last year, according to the volunteer teams. Registration is free via parkrun.com.de; runners only need to register once to get a barcode for timing. Start times are always 9am sharp, rain or shine.
There’s no fee to join, and all abilities are welcome. Participants can walk, jog, run, or even volunteer to help out. Many local wellness coaches recommend parkrun as a beginner-friendly introduction to regular aerobic exercise, and several health insurers—including TK and DAK—recognize participation as eligible for bonus programme points. Water fountains along the routes are turned on from late April through September, and portable toilets are set up near starting areas for event days.
For those keen to give it a try, simply register online, print your barcode, and turn up a few minutes early. Check the Westpark and Riemer Park parkrun Facebook pages on Friday evenings for up-to-date announcements—occasionally, big city events or maintenance can mean a change in meeting point or route. With new faces joining each week and a friendly post-run coffee crowd, parkrun offers both fitness and friendships around every curve.
